Keep These Things in Mind When Preparing to Move

As with many things in life, the more prepared you are and the more planning you do, the more likely things will go smoother. Moving homes in Dallas Tx is no different. There is always going to be stress, and packing is tiring work, but if you keep these things in mind, it should help you get through the process a little easier.

It takes longer to pack than you think. Whatever time you initially budget for it, double it. You will get distracted. Putting together boxes takes time. Wrapping items up and finding a way to pack them safely takes time. You’ll have trouble finding the start of the tape roll. So plan for extra time to pack, regardless of how many people are packing.

You will also find yourself wondering if you want to keep items or get rid of them. In general, before you start packing, go through and do as much decluttering as possible. Be harsh and get rid of items you know you haven’t used in more than a year or that you know you don’t really need. You’ll appreciate it when it comes time to unpack. If there are items that can be grouped and stored together before packing, do it, so you have fewer individual items to deal with.

Don’t overpack, creating unrealistically heavy boxes. You may want to make the most of all of the space in a box, but that can cause problems. When packing books, for example, go with smaller boxes, even if it means buying more boxes. Books are heavy and add up quickly and become unmanageable. A box that is too heavy also risks falling apart and some movers may not be willing to risk it, and will repack the box into smaller boxes, which just slows them down. Try to do a mix of heavy and light when dealing with bigger boxes so you can get the most of the space without overloading.

Make sure you label your boxes. Even if it’s just the name of the room the items belong in, that can help. For bedrooms, offices, etc., consider labeling the boxes more specifically, such as X’s bedroom, and then put up signs in your new house for when the movers arrive so they can distribute items with fewer questions. Even better, add some details as to what items are in each box. When you have a room full of boxes, you’ll appreciate being able to find certain items more quickly.

Finally, try to keep a moving folder or envelope. This is useful for keeping paperwork from the movers, along with lists of tasks that must be done before the big move, such as canceling services, picking up packing supplies, etc. Keep the folder or envelope in one place so it’s easy to find and refer to when needed. Even if you don’t keep a physical folder, consider keeping lists on your phone or creating a moving folder in your email – anything that you can refer to easily.

These basic steps will help your move go a little easier. It still takes time and energy, but the more organized you are, the smoother it will go. By the time you’re moving into one of the homes in Dallas TX, you’ll be better prepared for unpacking and starting life in your new home.
